Gwendolyn Smith cheated several landlords out of rent and utilities, moving into a series of apartments with no intention to pay for anything.
Gwendolyn had first squatted and cheated landlords in California, before she moved to Oregon to continue doing the same. She had been ordered to pay over $49,000 in back rent and damages to a Sonoma County landlord. The landlord Connie Cook ended up losing her home in Graton, in foreclosure, due to the enormous loss of rental income, while Gwendolyn squatted and Cook was unable to remove her.
Meanwhile, Smith moved on to Oregon, skipping out on paying the back rent due to Cook. She continued her scamming and squatting career in Oregon.
From April to December 2010, The Santa Rosa Press Democrat ran a series of articles detailing Gwendolyn Smith’s legal troubles with former landlords that resulted in a $42,500 default judgment and an eviction.
Smith sued over the media stories, alleging defamation, and demanding $2.5 million in damages.
U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ruled Thursday that the coverage was not defamatory.
You can put a dress on a pig, but it’s still a pig. And Gwendolyn can argue about the news, but she’s still a serial squatter and scammer. Oink.
The owner of the Santa Rosa home where Gwendolyn squatted, ended up losing her home because of Smith’s malicious behavior.
